Overview of How to Clean Your Fireplace Safely
A clean fireplace burns better, smells better, and is safer. The cleaning steps differ a lot between gas logs and wood fires, and the most important safety step is one many homeowners skip: a dedicated gas shutoff you can reach without touching the appliance. Below is how to clean both types, and where a professional should take over.
Before You Start
- Let everything cool. For concrete logs, one manufacturer recommends waiting at least 60 minutes after the last burn.
- Wear heavy work gloves, safety glasses, and a dust mask.
- Lay down drop cloths or tarps. Soot stains carpet and upholstery fast.
- Take a photo of the log layout before you move anything.
- Open a window for ventilation
Cleaning a Gas Log Fireplace
Step 1: Shut off the gas
Turn the gas valve to “off” and make sure the pilot light is out. Then wait about 10 minutes so any residual gas clears the line. Turn off any wall switches or remote power as well.napoleon+1
Step 2: Remove the logs
Take the screens, glass, and curtains off first. Then lift the logs out one at a time, wearing gloves. Set them on a towel or drop cloth so they don’t scratch. The photo matters here. Logs placed incorrectly can cause the burner to produce soot, and manufacturers warn that wrong placement can raise the risk of carbon monoxide.napoleon+3
Step 3: Clean the logs
- Ceramic fiber logs: Take them outside. Brush gently with a soft brush or a vacuum brush attachment, then blow off remaining debris with compressed air.woodlanddirect
- Refractory ceramic logs: One retailer suggests a 1:1 water and dish soap mix on a coarse cloth, left for about five minutes and then rinsed. Others say not to spray cleaners or water on logs at all and to only brush or vacuum. Check your manufacturer’s manual first.
- Concrete logs and panels: Use a soft brush or low-pressure air with a shop vacuum nearby. For stains, dab with a cloth dampened with distilled water. Skip sealers, waxes, and coatings unless the manufacturer approves them.grandcanyongaslogs
Step 4: Clean the burner and firebox
Use a vacuum hose to remove dust, cobwebs, and debris from the firebox floor and walls. Go gently around the burner ports and don’t disturb any components. Compressed air can clear the burner port holes and air-mixing openings. Wipe glass and metal with a microfiber cloth and mild soap or a non-abrasive fireplace glass cleaner. Avoid harsh chemicals.acerobbins+2
Step 5: Dry, reassemble, and relight
Make sure every part is completely dry. Damp parts can interfere with safe operation. Put the logs back exactly as they were, close the glass, turn the gas back on, and relight the pilot if needed.napoleon
Disconnecting Gas Logs: Call a Pro
You don’t need to disconnect gas logs to clean them. Turning off the valve and lifting the logs off the burner is enough. Do not unscrew gas fittings, flex lines, or the burner connection yourself. An improperly reseated fitting is a leak source, and a leak can mean fire, explosion, or carbon monoxide exposure.
Fireplace shutoff valves also vary:
- Many systems have a safety pilot that cuts gas if the flame goes out. Older installations might not have this. Delta T NC is always ready to modernize your system. woodlanddirect
- A valve for gas logs is generally expected to sit outside the firebox.nachi
- Older homes often have a key valve in the hearth, or no usable shutoff at all. Call Delta T and we’ll come out and modernize your system in as little as an hour.
If your only way to stop the gas is a valve buried in the firebox, or you can’t tell where the shutoff is, that’s the problem to fix.
Why you want a dedicated shutoff just for your gas logs
A separate, accessible gas cutoff on the fireplace supply line means you can isolate the appliance for cleaning, repairs, or an emergency without shutting off gas to the whole house. It also lets a technician service the log set safely.
Delta T NC can install a code-compliant shutoff and pressure-test the line afterward. Call us if:
- You smell gas, or you’ve had a pilot that keeps going out.
- Your valve is stiff, corroded, or inside the firebox.
- You’re replacing logs or switching between vented and ventless sets.
- You aren’t certain where your fireplace shutoff is.
If you smell gas: Don’t flip switches or use a phone inside. Leave the house, then call your gas utility or 911 from outside.
Cleaning a Wood-Burning Fireplace
Understand what you’re cleaning
Creosote builds up in stages. First-stage creosote is mostly soot and brushes out easily. Later stages become tar-like flakes and shiny glazed deposits that are harder to remove and are a chimney fire hazard. Glazed buildup usually needs a professional.burlingtonfireplace+2
Step 1: Prepare the room
Open windows, put down tarps, and wear long sleeves, rubber gloves, unvented goggles, and a mask. Let the fireplace cool fully. One guide recommends 12 hours after the last fire for wood stoves.
Step 2: Remove ash and sweep the firebox
Scoop out ash into a metal container and keep it away from the house. Leave a thin layer if you like, since it insulates the fire, but clear the rest. Vacuum the firebox floor and any clean-out door with a vacuum designed for ash.
Step 3: Remove soot and creosote from the firebox walls
For brick, a common DIY method is a paste of equal parts salt and dish soap. Apply it to the stained areas, let it sit at least 15 minutes, then scrub with a stiff brush. Rinse with cold water and wipe clean. That source also adds ammonia to the mix. Don’t use ammonia without good ventilation, and never mix it with bleach or other cleaners.mcpchimneyservices
Step 4: Brush the flue
Seal the firebox opening with a drop cloth taped tightly. Even a small gap lets fine soot into the room. Brush with steady up-and-down strokes, then wait about 30 minutes for soot to settle before removing the cloth. If the roof isn’t safely accessible, don’t climb up. Hire a certified chimney sweep.firepitsurplus
About creosote logs
Creosote-treating logs and sprays may help, but they don’t remove or stop creosote from forming. Flaking creosote still has to be physically cleaned out.lordschimney
Keep it from coming back
Burn dry, seasoned wood and keep enough air flowing to the fire. Have the chimney inspected annually, whether or not you think it needs cleaning.burlingtonfireplace
