Whatever you call it

We Work On It

The equipment may look different, but the symptoms and the fixes are familiar to us. Describe what you're seeing in your own words and we'll take it from there.

Natural gas or propane: we service both

Most gas heat in the Triangle runs on one of two fuels, and the difference affects your repair and replacement options.

Natural gas from the utility

. If your home sits in an area with municipal gas service, your fuel arrives through underground lines from the local gas utility. In much of the Triangle that's Enbridge Gas North Carolina. Enbridge acquired PSNC (Public Service Company of North Carolina), so you may still see the PSNC name on older paperwork, meters, or in conversation with neighbors. Natural gas is generally the more convenient option: no deliveries, no tank to monitor, and the gas just keeps flowing.

Propane (LP) from a free-standing tank

Many homes outside the municipal gas footprint, including plenty of rural and semi-rural properties, heat with propane stored in a tank on the property. A propane supplier fills the tank, and you may own the tank or lease it from the supplier. Propane is a great option when natural gas lines don't reach your street.

Signs It's Time to Replace Your Gas Furnace

A repair makes sense when the problem is small and the unit has life left. Replacement makes sense when the repairs keep coming and the system is no longer worth the money. Here are the signs we look for.

  • Your furnace or gas pack is 15 to 20 years old, or older.

Age alone isn't a verdict, but it matters. Parts get harder to find, efficiency drops, and breakdowns become more likely.

  • The repair bills keep stacking up.

If you're calling us every winter for another fix, you're paying for a system that's winding down. We'll lay out the numbers so you can compare repair costs against replacement.

  • Your gas or propane bill keeps climbing.

A heater that burns more fuel to deliver the same warmth is losing efficiency. Newer equipment is built to use fuel more wisely.

  • Some rooms are warm and others are cold.

Uneven heat can point to a failing blower, duct problems, or a unit that can no longer keep up. We'll check whether it's the equipment or the ductwork before recommending anything.

  • The furnace runs constantly or short-cycles.

Running nonstop without reaching the thermostat setting, or turning on and off every few minutes, is a sign something's wrong.

  • New or louder noises.

Banging, grinding, or squealing from your gas pack or furnace is your equipment asking for attention.

  • Soot, rust, or moisture around the unit.

Visible corrosion, soot marks, or water near the furnace should be looked at promptly.

  • A carbon monoxide alarm goes off, or a technician finds a cracked heat exchanger.

If your CO alarm sounds, get everyone outside and call for help. A cracked heat exchanger is one of the situations where replacement is usually the sensible answer. Every home with gas or propane equipment should have working CO detectors.

  • The flame looks wrong.

A healthy furnace flame is steady and mostly blue. Yellow, orange, or flickering flames can mean a combustion problem and deserve a professional look.

  • Your system is a gas pack that's rusting out.

Package units sit outdoors and take a beating from weather. If the cabinet is corroded or the unit has been repaired repeatedly, replacement is often cleaner than another patch.
