Musty Smell From Your Vents? Start With the Coil.

If you turn on the AC and get a damp, stale smell, the source is often the evaporator coil. It stays cold and wet all summer, which is exactly the kind of surface where mold and mildew like to settle in. In Cary, Apex, Durham and across the Triangle, our humid summers make it a common call.

A UV light installed at the coil is designed to help keep that surface cleaner between filter changes and tune-ups. Because it's part of your system, it works whenever your system runs.

Why Built-In Instead of a Standalone Purifier?

A plug-in purifier cleans the air in one room, if you remember to run it and replace its filters. A UV light installed in your HVAC system treats the surfaces and air moving through the one system that serves your whole house, and you don't have to think about it.

What UV Can and Can't Do

We'd rather you know this up front. UV light is designed to help reduce biological growth, such as mold and bacteria, on the surfaces and in the air it reaches. It doesn't remove dust, pollen or pet dander, and it doesn't take out odors or gases. That's the job of a good filter, which is why we usually recommend UV alongside proper filtration, not instead of it.

Most central systems can take one, but it depends on your equipment and where there's room to mount the lamp. We'll check during a visit.

The lamp sits sealed inside the equipment, away from living spaces. We follow the manufacturer's installation requirements and wiring standards on every job.

If the smell comes from growth on the coil, it can help. If it's coming from somewhere else, like a clogged drain, a duct leak or moisture in the crawlspace, UV won't fix the cause, and we'll tell you that.

No. UV and filtration do different jobs, and they work best together.

This varies by product. It is included in your bi-annual maintenance visit.

It depends on your system and the type of unit. Call or chat with us and we'll give you a straight answer.
